On Tuesday, October 10 a handful of members of the Grandville Jenison Chamber joined students of Jordan Whittecar’s marketing class at the Green Bean Coffee Shop located in Jenison High School for some “speed networking” and coffee.
Members gave a commercial (story) on their chosen industry, their education and how they give back in their community. They then paired them up with 2 students in a “Speed Networking” format … The students initiated the conversation based on things they heard in their story, and switched tables every 5 minutes. When asked what they liked about our first event:
I found out that not choosing your major before you go to college isn’t really that big of a deal. They also gave me some advice on how to apply for a job and market myself. Pretty useful information! Stu Tolsma, JHS Student
The coffee talks were a great experience to talk to business people in our community. I enjoyed listening to their stories and what they do for a job, I also appreciated the advice that they gave us. Brock VanManen, JHS Student
I really enjoyed the time spent with Jenison students this morning at Coffee with Students! It was refreshing to be around the energy of young talent in an environment that allowed the students to ask inquisitive questions and engage with area professionals. Coffee with students is an innovative way to bridge the talent gap in our community by connecting business leaders with future talent, and it allows business leaders the opportunity to give back in a unique way. Kelly Mansfield / Marketing Director – Navigator Truck Insurance Agency
Thanks for making this happen! It was great to talk with the students and the interactive format provided great opportunities to both talk and listen to the students! Mark Richter, President/CEO First United Credit Union
The new program was designed to educate the business community on the programs that the schools are doing that requires business participation is also a great opportunity for students to be on the receiving end of the interview process. Both Jenison High School and Grandville High School will meet monthly with different students and businesses participating.
