Our team is grateful to the career mentors/employers that have signed up to impact students on Groundhog Shadow Day, Friday, February 5, 2021. However we need more mentors, in a wide variety of occupations, to match the interests of Kent County high school students.

We have revised timelines to give more employers the opportunity to get involved. Please join us on this great day of career exploration!

New GSD timelines:

December 15 – a live view of the current virtual job shadow board opportunities will be available to students/schools so they can begin their planning. We will add new opportunities once a week.

January 8, 2021 – final deadline for mentor registration

January 13-24, 2021 – student registration

January 29, 2021 – all stakeholders receive final confirmations

Make an impact with minimal time commitment. Through 60-minute live virtual job shadows, mentors can influence young people exploring an occupation of interest, or checking out a new one.

Join us as a virtual career mentor on Friday, February 5, 2021. Kent ISD’s Career Readiness team will be connecting 9-12 grade students and local employers for a great day of career exploration.  Through hundreds of 60-minute live virtual job shadows, mentors can influence groups of students interested in learning more about an occupation of interest, or investigating new ones.

We are excited to see how local professionals, like you, will make an impact by sharing their own career path, an “inside scoop” on their industry, along with encouragement, to help young people trying to figure out their next steps.

Groundhog Shadow Day Overview:
Three timeslots of virtual job shadows will be organized.
·       Session 1: 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM
·       Session 2: 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
·       Session 3: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

You can host your own virtual job shadow, or showcase a variety of occupations or a department, by collaborating with a few colleagues. To serve more students, consider offering your session more than once!

Virtual Job Shadows may include:
Career Conversations. Share yourcareer path (students love to know how adults got from “here to there”!). Include information on your education, daily work, the best/worst parts of your job, and the inside scoop of your industry. This information is GOLD to young people and they will be thrilled to meet you.

Visuals to engage young people. Don’t forget what it was like to be a teenager. We encourage you to utilize visuals as much as you can. Consider incorporating live demonstrations, a virtual tour or live “behind the scenes” peek at your work place. Utilizing polls or chats to connect with students would be fun too. We’re excited to see what creative ideas our local employers will develop!

Please note that mentors will be hosting the virtual event on their preferred platform. The link will be requested in the registration.

Mentor registration is NOW open through December 4, 2020. Our goal is to have all GSD virtual job shadow opportunities posted by mid-December, so schools can plan for GSD 2021.  The Kent ISD Career Readiness team will coordinate all marketing and communication between mentors and schools/students.

The GSD registration form only takes 5 minutes to complete, and will help provide all the information students will need.  Please pay special attention to the “commercial” portion.  This is the primary information that students will use to select their placement from the GSD Virtual Job Shadow Board.

We value your contributions in helping Kent County students become college and career ready.

Let me know if you have questions.
