Katherine Tanja, Daughter of John & Liz Tanja is the recipient of the Grandville Jenison Chamber’s $1000 Grandville Community Business Scholarship.
A Calvin Christian High School Senior, Katherine will be attending the University of Michigan studying business in the Fall. In addition to being at the top of her class, Katherine also served as the Editor and Chief/Founder of the schools first online newsletter, Calvin Drama Society and the National Honor Society to name a few. Outside the classroom, she was involved in soccer and volleyball and still finds time to volunteer at her church (Ivanrest CRC) and Degage Ministries.
Below is an excerpt from nomination letter submitted by Thelma Ensink, Principal of Calvin Christian High School.
“Katie is one of the most intelligent and hardworking students I have encountered. She is an excellent student and does very well academically in all subjects. She excels as a writer and a critical thinker. She prides herself in producing professional quality work. As a member of the first forensics team, I was astounded by her performance in the Sales Speaking category. She wrote an excellent script and competed against students from across our State, who were members of established teams and had multiple years of experience. Katie was the regional champion and attained the honor of being a State semi-finalist in Sales Speaking. This is a rare accomplishment and one that showcases Katie’s multiple abilities.
I nominate Katherine, without hesitation, for the Grandville Business Scholarship. I believe she is worthy of this honor as demonstrated by her outstanding work as a highschool student. She will make her high school, family, community and the University of Michigan proud”
Katherine will be recognized at the Chamber’s Community Awards Reception held on Thursday, April 26. The event is open to the public.
